UU church shooting

Jul. 28th, 2008 | 09:01 am
posted by: morningdove3202 in spiritualparent

You may have heard on the new of the gunman who killed 2 and injured 7
more at a church in Tennessee, but what some reports haven't included
is that this is a Unitarian Universalist Church! Although a motive is
not clear, there is some thought that this is a hate crime. Please
send positive healing thoughts, energy, or prayers to the members of the TVUUC.
If you would like to send a car, there address is at the last web site below.

Thanks,
Dove

a quote from "Religious Literacy"

“Parents could also do a better job teaching their children about their religious traditions. Some friends tell me that they don’t bring their sons and daughters to worship services or talk with them about their faith because they want their children to be free to choose a religion for themselves. This is foolhardy, not unlike saying that you will not read anything to your daughter because you don’t want to enslave her to any one language. The fact of the matter is that you cannot avoid teaching religion to your kids, if you offer them nothing, you are telling them that religion counts for nothing.”

From Religious Literacy by Stephen Prothero, p 126

I found this online, and previewed the songs, and they sound great! I recognize allot of them from the UU hymnal.

Parents in Two-Religion Households

May. 9th, 2008 | 06:21 pm
posted by: alumahzev in spiritualparent

Hi, all. I'm Alumah, and I co-write The Soccer Moms' Guide to Wicca with Fae. I just posted in the paganparents community, but I'm not sure how much ovelap there is between that group and this one, so I'll risk repeating myself. :-)

I'm married to a Jewish man, and we work hard at blending our religious viewpoints and teaching our kids (girl-boy twins) about our shared values. While my husband and kids know about my religious path, I'm firmly in the broom closet in our community. Given that we're actively involved in local Jewish schools and organizations, I don't want to put my kids in the position of having to defend their mother's religious choices.

I also teach and mentor students of Wicca in our on-line learning coven, The Athame's Edge. Fae and I, along with her husband and our coven sister, have been running the coven since 2004. It's amazing how much you learn through teaching.

If you are struggling with raising your kids in a two-religion household, or if you're dealing with staying in or coming out of the broom closet, I'd love to share stories and experiences with you.

Bright Blessings,
Alumah

Hello!

My name is Fae, I've been actively practicing Wicca for almost 9 years. I live in Bridgewater, NJ with my husband and two kids. I began studying actively on a large, well-known online coven in 2000, and broke off with my own after completing the second circle there. My husband and I, and two of our close friends have been teaching Progressive Wicca at our site, athamesedge.com since 2004.

Teaching Wicca and expanding the boundaries of religious tolerance in our local suburbs has had a huge effect on me and my family. Watching my 8 and 11 year old grow up in our middle-class neighborhood is difficult, and I've come to the conclusion that there's got to be a lot of parents who are struggling with being in or out of the broom closet as far as their kids are concerned. My covenmate and I just started a blog called The Soccer Moms' Guide to Wicca, in the hopes of finding and relating to other parents that are in similar situations. That's at Wiccamoms.com.

Happy to meet you all!

-Fae

This definatly has an impact on our spirituality, no matter what the flavor. My son is only six, but he watched all 20 minutes of it by his own choice! Check it out, show it to your kids, and see what they think!!

Books on Pagan Parenting

Apr. 14th, 2008 | 03:51 pm
posted by: briar_witch in spiritualparent

I've decided to compile a list of books that I think are good for pagan parenting. Not all are directly pagan related, but they do fit in with the pagan spirituality, and I have them on my "must have" list.

Circle Round: Raising Children In Goddess Traditions by Starhawk, Diane Baker, and Anne Hill
Celebrating The Great Mother: A Handbook of Earth-Honoring Activities for Parents and Children by Cait Johnson and Marua D. Shaw.
Pagan Parenting by Kristin Madden
Last Child In The Woods by Richard Louv
Teaching Meditation to Children by David Fontana and Ingrid Slack
Any of the Meditations for Children books by Maureen Garth.
How To Have Intelligent and Creative Conversations With Your Kids by Jane M. Healy
How To Talk So Kids Will Listen & Listen So Kids Will Talk by Adele Faber and Elaine Mazlish
Children Learn What They Live: Parenting To Inspire Values by Dorothy Law Nolte and Rachel Harris

I'm sure there's more, and will add on to the list as I come across them.

Does anyone have any other suggestions for reading material?
